The Birth of Raindrop Geomagic
In 1991, Ping encountered a problem in trying to digitally compute spaces,
shapes, and objects from their physical forms. She discussed the problem with
her husband, Edelsbrunner, who came up with a mathematical solution.
From those equations, Ping came up with a 3-D graphics computerised digital
application that helped simplify the problem.
In 1997, Ping left the NCSA to
devote all her time and energy on this computer application and co-founded Geomagic along with Edelsbrunner in 1996...

However, the first year at Research Triangle Park for Geomagic was disastrous
as the company was not able to generate any revenues...

Future Vision
Ping had a vision for both Geomagic and DSSP technology. As far as Geomagic
was concerned, she wanted to go in for a public issue to repay her early
investors, gain the trust of large customers, and expand the business.
This
would also help Geomagic deal with competitors like INUS Technology, South
Korea, and Innovmetric, Canada, who were catching up with Geomagic (Refer to
Exhibit V for a brief note on Geomagic's competitors). Another significant
